Ajax Sign Bissouma: A Fresh Start in Midfield
Ajax have ended Yves Bissouma’s spell in limbo, handing the Mali international a long-term contract and a clear stage on which to rebuild his career in Amsterdam.
The former Tottenham and Brighton midfielder has signed a deal at the Johan Cruyff ArenA running until June 30, 2027, with the club confirming the agreement takes effect immediately. For Ajax, it is a strategic move. For Bissouma, it is a lifeline.
From Premier League doubts to Dutch opportunity
His final season in North London never really got going. Bissouma managed only 11 appearances for Spurs, unable to convince successive coaches that he could be trusted week in, week out. On the pitch, he slipped down the pecking order. Off it, his reputation took hits.
Disciplinary issues stalked his time at Tottenham, most notably a high-profile suspension two years ago after social media footage appeared to show him using nitrous oxide. The incident became a symbol of a spell that promised far more than it delivered.
Now he arrives in the Eredivisie with something to prove and, crucially, somewhere that actually wants him.
“I feel really happy. It means a lot, because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. And for me to be part of the trip of this great club is something nice,” Bissouma said, the relief obvious in his words as he spoke about the move.
Sold on the Ajax project
This is not a last-minute scramble or a panic signing. Ajax have been working on this for months.
Technical Director Jordi Cruijff revealed that talks with Bissouma began back in August, with the club carefully tracking his situation as his Tottenham contract ran down. When the chance came to sign a player of his profile on a free, Ajax moved decisively.
“Discussions with Yves began in August and we are delighted that he has now signed for Ajax. We have brought in an experienced player who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He is capable of playing in several positions, and we hope he will be available for selection as soon as possible,” Cruijff said.
Bissouma, for his part, made it clear this was not a deal that came out of nowhere.
“Not really, because I've spoken to a lot of people here beforehand. They told me about the project and that was very interesting to me. That's why I'm here,” he explained. “They just told me the project, what they really want to do this year and for the years that are coming as well.”
That “project” is obvious: restore Ajax to the top of Dutch football and make them a force in Europe again, built around a core of hungry, technically sharp players. Bissouma fits that template, but with an added edge – he brings Premier League experience and the scars of a difficult spell.
Steel, leadership and a point to prove
Ajax are not just buying talent. They are buying presence.
The club see Bissouma as a player who can add bite and control to the heart of their midfield, someone capable of playing in several roles and setting the tone without the ball. His own targets are blunt.
“I’m a winner and then you want to win everything. That’s my desire and I’m ready to start,” he said. No caveats, no talk of transition seasons. Just a demand for trophies.
He also spoke about his role in the dressing room, fully aware of Ajax’s reputation as a finishing school for young talent.
“I'm just going to give them some advice, like how I see things and how I see football. Just to let them know I'm here for all of them, all of the youngest players. They can talk to me, we can have a very good conversation about anything,” he added.
Ajax have long relied on experienced figures to guide their academy graduates through the jump to senior football. If Bissouma embraces that responsibility, he becomes more than just another signing. He becomes a reference point.
The question now is simple: can a player whose career stalled in England turn that frustration into dominance in Amsterdam? Ajax have made their bet. Bissouma insists he is ready to repay it.
