Bradford City Sign Defender Hayden Matthews on Loan

Bradford City have moved to bolster their back line with the season-long loan signing of Portsmouth defender Hayden Matthews.

The 22-year-old centre-back, capped once by Australia, joins after a stop-start spell at Fratton Park, where injuries repeatedly checked his momentum. Since arriving from Sydney FC in a £1.25m deal in January 2025, Matthews has managed 20 appearances for Pompey, showing enough in those outings to suggest there is a high-calibre defender waiting to emerge with a consistent run.

That run never quite came on the south coast. His last competitive appearance came in the 1-1 draw with Birmingham at Fratton Park on the final day of last season, a reminder of how long he has been on the fringes. Bradford are betting that regular football in League Two can turn that frustration into authority.

Matthews becomes the third new loan face through the door at Mbanq Valley Parade in quick succession, following the arrivals of QPR midfielder Kieran Morgan and Blackburn Rovers defender George Pratt. It is a clear pattern: targeted, short-term deals to add energy and depth across the spine of the team.
