In England, the noise is growing that City are weighing up a move before the deadline. Against that backdrop, his omission on a routine cup night suddenly feels anything but routine.

Xabi Alonso tried to strip the drama out of it.

The Chelsea head coach insisted the decision was purely tactical, rooted in rotation and the specific demands of a tie against Luton. No punishment. No disciplinary issue. No brewing storm behind the scenes.

"It was simply about today's match," Alonso said after the win. "We have other players who need minutes to play."

The timing, he claimed, was straightforward too. Asked when he decided to leave Fernández out, Alonso was blunt: "Wednesday evening. It's a decision I made."

Alonso went out of his way to protect the midfielder’s reputation. He described Fernández as "extremely professional," a player who trains well and gives nothing away in his daily work. If there is a transfer saga unfolding, Alonso wanted no part in feeding it.

"Enzo is a good professional. He trains well, and I have nothing to say about that," he stressed. "Simply, these are decisions we have to make with the match we played tonight in mind. We'll see on Sunday."

That last line matters.

Alonso left the door open for Fernández to return for Sunday’s league game against Brighton at Stamford Bridge. A recall would suggest business as usual, at least on the surface. Another omission, with Manchester City interest still being reported in England, would send a very different message.

For now, Chelsea maintain that this was about rotation, about sharing minutes in a long season. Yet when a player of Fernández’s stature, who has already signalled a desire to leave, suddenly disappears from a matchday squad while the champions of England consider a bid, every selection call starts to look like something more.
