FC Groningen Dominates PEC Zwolle with 3-0 Victory

FC Groningen did not just beat PEC Zwolle on Friday night. They brushed them aside. A sharp, confident 3-0 win at the Euroborg lifted Dick Lukkien’s team into sixth place and pushed a fragile Zwolle side down to 16th, still reeling from last weekend’s 0-7 humiliation against Feyenoord.

Groningen seize control early

Any notion that PEC Zwolle might respond with defiance disappeared almost as soon as the match settled. Groningen played on the front foot, snapping into duels and moving the ball with purpose, while the visitors looked cautious, almost haunted by Rotterdam.

The breakthrough came after 20 minutes and it was beautifully constructed. Marco Rente stepped in from the back and split the defence with a clever ball into Jorg Schreuders. The midfielder showed real composure, pausing just long enough to draw blue shirts towards him before rolling the ball back into space. Thom van Bergen arrived, side-footed calmly, and the Euroborg erupted. 1-0, and fully deserved.

The goal sharpened Groningen’s play. Passes zipped, runs overlapped, and Zwolle retreated deeper, trying to keep the scoreline respectable. They couldn’t.

Schreuders punishes a costly mistake

The pressure told again before the interval. Ryan Thomas, under pressure in midfield, lost possession in a dangerous area. Schreuders pounced instantly, driving forward and deciding the moment himself. On his “weaker” left foot, from outside the box, he drilled a low, precise strike beyond the keeper to make it 2-0.

It was the sort of goal that underlined the difference in confidence between the two sides. Groningen looked liberated. Zwolle looked wary of every misplaced touch.

Zwolle finally threaten – briefly

After the break, Zwolle at least showed a flicker of resistance. Their first real chance of the night arrived when a low cross from the left skidded through the area. Gabriël Reiziger stretched to meet it and managed the faintest of touches, enough to worry the home crowd for a heartbeat. The ball slid past the far post and with it went a rare opportunity to change the mood.

Groningen did not panic. They dropped the tempo when needed, then accelerated in bursts, keeping Zwolle at arm’s length and refusing to let the game drift.

Land’s thunderbolt ends the contest

Any remaining doubt vanished in the 68th minute. From an indirect, rehearsed free-kick routine, Tygo Land stepped into the spotlight. The ball was rolled into his path on the edge of the area and he did the rest, thundering a fierce strike into the top corner for 3-0.

It was a training-ground move executed with ruthless clarity, the sort of goal that makes a coaching staff smile and an opponent sag.

Zwolle’s heads dropped. Groningen, by contrast, hunted a fourth.

Van Bergen almost found it. A loose ball dropped kindly to him inside the penalty area and, sensing a second goal, he swung his left foot. This time the finish lacked the precision of his opener and the chance went begging.

No matter. The damage had long been done.

Groningen walked off to warm applause, climbing into the top six with momentum and belief. Zwolle trudged away from another heavy defeat, still searching for answers and, more urgently, for a way to stop the slide.
