Nearly six million managers were burned by Erling Haaland (£15.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) in Gameweek 1. Two premium price tags, two blanks, a lot of clenched teeth. Yet here we are, on the brink of another deadline, and the armband conversation still circles back to the same names.

The twist in the tale comes from London. Arsenal and Chelsea both impressed last weekend, and their assets are beginning to knock on the captaincy door.
The champions head to a struggling Aston Villa side, a trip that would usually be seen as a test of nerve. Right now, it looks more like an opportunity for those willing to move away from the obvious picks and lean into form and fixture.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea host Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday, and that match-up has pushed one name into the captaincy conversation: Joao Pedro (£7.6m). The Brazilian has surged past almost the entire field in the poll, the only player outside Haaland and Fernandes to clear the 5% mark.
He faces his former club, at home, in a side that looked sharp last weekend. There’s narrative, there’s form, and there’s value. No wonder many expect him to be one of the most-selected players in FPL by the time the deadline hits.
The Numbers, the Projections, the Call
This week’s captaincy debate doesn’t just lean on gut feeling. Managers are poring over player and team statistics from Gameweek 1, eyeing up expected goals, shot volume, chance creation and involvement. They are checking Rate My Team (RMT) points projections, weighing floor versus ceiling, risk versus safety.
