Mourinho Confirms Alexander-Arnold Will Stay at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has drawn a firm line under the Trent Alexander-Arnold debate. The Real Madrid manager has, according to reports in Spain, ruled out any possibility of the England international leaving the club in the January window, despite his sparse minutes this season.

No winter escape route

Defensa Central report that Mourinho wants Alexander-Arnold firmly inside his plans for the second half of the season and has no intention of authorising a mid-season departure. Premier League clubs have been watching closely, sensing opportunity as the defender’s situation at the Bernabéu has grown more uncomfortable.

The noise in England has risen week by week. A return to familiar surroundings, a league tailored to his attacking instincts, has been floated as a logical next step if his minutes do not improve.

Madrid, though, are not entertaining that scenario for January. Mourinho, fully aware of the scrutiny that follows both club and player, is determined to protect the squad’s stability as the season heads into a decisive phase.

He wants focus, not distraction. And that instruction lands hardest on Alexander-Arnold.

A complicated role, not a discarded player

The 25-year-old’s campaign tells its own story. Just 345 minutes in all competitions so far. Only 266 of those in La Liga. The remaining 79 in the UEFA Champions League. For a player who arrived from Liverpool expecting to compete at the very top of the European game, those numbers bite.

He is not first-choice at right-back. The arrival of Denzel Dumfries has sharpened the competition and pushed Alexander-Arnold further from automatic selection, a risk he knew existed when he signed. The reality of it, though, is always harsher than the theory.

Mourinho, however, is not writing him off. The Portuguese coach is said to be intent on making sure the defender does not feel cut adrift in the dressing room. Starts cannot be promised, but involvement can. Minutes, chances, a role in the rotation – that is the offer on the table.

The message from the bench is simple: stay engaged, stay ready.

What Mourinho still sees in him

For all the tactical arguments around his defending, Alexander-Arnold brings something different to this Madrid squad. Mourinho recognises it.

From deep and wide, his passing range can break lines that others recycle. His creativity from full-back changes the geometry of attacks, turning defensive positions into launchpads. In transition, when the game stretches, his vision and delivery provide a dimension that contrasts with the more industrious, multi-role profile of Federico Valverde on the right.

Those qualities are why Mourinho wants him in the building for the run-in, not weighing up boarding passes in January.

Premier League talk on hold

In England, the storyline has already started to write itself: if the minutes stay low, a Premier League return will be on the table sooner rather than later. That may still be true in the long term.

Right now, though, Mourinho’s stance slams the brakes on any winter move. Real Madrid’s January plan does not include Alexander-Arnold’s departure. The club’s priority is to navigate a congested, high-stakes stretch of the season with as many reliable options as possible.

For Alexander-Arnold, the equation is brutally clear. The rumours can wait. The games cannot.

His task is to squeeze everything out of the opportunities that do come – to turn 20-minute cameos into arguments, to make his passing and imagination impossible to ignore as the calendar tightens and the pressure climbs.

If he does that, the conversation around his future in Madrid will sound very different by the time this season is done.
