Piero Hincapie Returns to Training Ahead of Everton Match
Piero Hincapie’s return to full training has arrived quicker than anyone at Arsenal dared expect – not least Mikel Arteta.
Barely weeks after the Arsenal manager warned the defender would be out for “weeks” following a freak post-match warm-down injury, the Ecuador international was back in the thick of it at London Colney on Friday, joining the main group ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Everton.
From freak setback to fast-track return
Hincapie has not played since a brief late cameo in the 2-1 win over Leeds earlier this month, an outing that was supposed to be routine but instead led to an unusual twist. It was after the final whistle, in the warm-down, that he picked up the problem which halted his momentum just as he was pushing for a more regular role.
He missed the trip to Nottingham Forest last weekend, restricted to individual work on the grass while the rest of the squad prepared for the Champions League clash away to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night. The timeline looked conservative. The diagnosis sounded cautious.
Then the defender accelerated it.
Arteta, speaking about the 24-year-old’s chances of featuring against Everton, left the door wide open. “Piero, let’s see,” he said. “If he is able to train the next few days he can be available for Everton, which is great news.”
The images from training backed that optimism. Hincapie moved freely, mixed into all the usual drills and, crucially, looked like a player who felt part of it again.
A noisy ‘welcome back’
There was more than just fitness testing on the agenda. As is often the case inside a tight dressing room, a serious return came wrapped in a bit of dressing-room theatre.
Before the hard work truly began, Hincapie was sent down a tunnel of team-mates and coaching staff, a classic initiation gauntlet. Cheers rang out, hands flew in, and the defender absorbed a few playful slaps to the head as he jogged through. It was noisy, light-hearted, and very deliberate.
For a player who has had to watch from the sidelines, that kind of rough-and-ready welcome matters. It said: you’re back, now earn your place.
If he comes through the next sessions unscathed, Arteta suddenly has another defensive option at a stage of the season when depth can define campaigns.
Timber’s milestone moment
While Hincapie’s swift recovery drew attention, another defender enjoyed a quieter, more ceremonial moment.
Jurrien Timber was presented with a special framed shirt to mark his 100th appearance for the club, a landmark that underlined his growing status within the squad. Surrounded by team-mates and staff, the gesture added a touch of occasion to what might otherwise have been just another pre-match workout.
So Arsenal head into the Everton game with one defender honoured and another unexpectedly back in contention. In a run-in where every detail counts, those are the kind of small shifts that can change the feel of a dressing room – and, soon enough, the shape of a season.
