Sam Edozie Requests Transfer from Southampton
Sam Edozie has submitted a transfer request at Southampton, declaring publicly that he wants out before Tuesday night’s deadline after what he describes as a series of blocked moves away from the club.
The 23-year-old winger took the rare step of publishing a detailed statement on Instagram, revealing he has received “multiple offers” from clubs across Europe and accusing Southampton of making any deal prohibitively difficult.
“I want to play regularly”
Edozie said he had the chance to leave last summer, only for the club to refuse a move. He says the same scenario played out again in January, and now, once more, this window.
“Last summer I had the opportunity to move elsewhere, but the club did not allow me to leave,” he wrote. “The same happened again in January. This summer, there have once again been multiple offers from clubs across Europe.”
At the heart of his frustration is what he claims is Southampton’s financial stance. According to Edozie, the club have “requested as much as 50% of any future transfer fee, which has made those opportunities extremely difficult to pursue”.
The winger, who joined Southampton from Manchester City in September 2022, has struggled to establish himself as a guaranteed starter. Across all competitions, he has 29 starts and 57 substitute appearances, a workload he now openly admits is not enough at this stage of his career.
He was loaned to Belgian side Anderlecht for the 2024-25 season, a move designed to give him more game time, but his message makes clear that a temporary switch is no longer what he wants.
He said he is not getting “the minutes I need” at Southampton and framed his stance around the short lifespan of a professional career.
“A football career is short, and I believe it is important I now have the opportunity to go somewhere I can play regularly, continue to develop and make the most of my career as a player,” he said.
Club silence as tension grows
BBC Sport have approached Southampton for comment, but the club have yet to respond publicly to Edozie’s claims or his transfer request.
What is clear is that a relationship once built on potential and patience has reached a hard crossroads. With the deadline looming and the player’s position laid bare in his own words, Southampton must now decide: dig in again, or finally let Edozie chase the regular football he insists he can no longer wait for.
