USA 3x3 U23 Team Aims for World Title in Wuhan

MINNEAPOLIS – The band is getting back together, and this time the stakes are higher.

Fresh off conquering the 2026 FIBA 3x3 Nations League Americas North Conference in Ñuñoa, Chile, Tori McKinney and a familiar USA Basketball quartet are headed to Wuhan, China, for a shot at a world title at the 2026 FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup, running Sept. 15-19.

Head coach Todd Monsey, who steered the group in Chile, has his core intact: McKinna Brackens, Dani Carnegie, Katie Fiso and McKinney. They’ve already proved they can handle pressure in the Americas. Now they step onto a global stage where every possession, every slip, every made two-pointer can swing a game in seconds.

A brutal schedule, a clear path

The Americans drop straight into the deep end in Pool D.

They open on Sept. 16 against Japan at 2:50 a.m. CT, an early-morning tip back home that will test body clocks as much as defensive rotations. A few hours later, at 7:50 a.m. CT, they face Kenya, a quick turnaround that mirrors the unforgiving rhythm of elite 3x3 play.

There’s no easing into this tournament. No warm-up fixtures. Just whistle, ball in, and a race to 21.

Pool play resumes Sept. 18 with another demanding double: Slovenia at 4:30 a.m. CT and Australia at 8:25 a.m. CT. Those two games could define the group. Slovenia brings European structure and spacing; Australia, physicality and edge. Survive that day, and the bracket opens up.

The format is ruthless. Four pools, five teams each. Only the top two in every group advance to the quarterfinals on Sept. 19. One bad stretch can send you home. One hot streak can carry you into medal contention.

Once the pools are settled, the knockout schedule will be finalized, but the mission is already clear: get out of Pool D, then embrace the chaos of a one-day sprint for the podium.

Familiar faces, new pressure

For Brackens, Carnegie, Fiso and McKinney, this is not a chemistry experiment. They already know each other’s tendencies, when to cut, when to clear, when to space and let a teammate cook. That continuity is gold in 3x3, where games last just 10 minutes and adjustments have to be instant.

Monsey knows exactly what he has, too. He saw this group handle travel, tight turnarounds and knockout pressure in Chile. Now he asks them to do it again against deeper, more varied opposition.

The schedule is set:

  • Sept. 16 – 2:50 a.m. CT vs. Japan
  • Sept. 16 – 7:50 a.m. CT vs. Kenya
  • Sept. 18 – 4:30 a.m. CT vs. Slovenia
  • Sept. 18 – 7:25 a.m. CT vs. Australia

Four games to earn a quarterfinal berth. Four chances to prove their Nations League title was just the beginning.

The World Cup will unfold half a world away in Wuhan. For this USA 3x3 U23 team, it’s the perfect stage to show whether a rising core can turn regional dominance into a global statement.
