Virginia Tennis Shines at Kitty Harrison Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia’s fall season began not with a gentle hit-up, but with a statement.

Across three days at the Kitty Harrison Invitational at the Chewning Tennis Center, first-year standout Shannon Lam tore through her eight-player singles flight, winning all three of her matches to claim the title and plant an early flag for the Cavaliers.

For a program measuring itself against national standards every year, Lam’s perfect start offers exactly the kind of spark coaches want from a newcomer. She didn’t just ease into college tennis; she owned her draw.

She wasn’t alone.

Katie Rolls, Alyssa James and Blanca Pico Navarro each pieced together two-win runs of their own, pushing through their respective flights and earning spots in the finals. Different opponents, different styles, same outcome: Cavaliers playing for titles on the opening weekend of the fall.

It’s early September tennis, but the stakes ramp up quickly now.

Next stop: Cary, N.C., and the ITA All-American Championships, running Sept. 19–27. It’s the first doorway to the NCAA Individual Championships, the first real chance to turn promising form into national relevance.

Virginia arrives with momentum, a confident freshman, and three more Cavaliers already playing their way into finals.

Now comes the test of whether this hot start can carry onto one of college tennis’ biggest early stages.
