2028 Copa America: Dates, Host, Teams, and What to Expect
When Will the 2028 Copa America Take Place?
The official dates for the 2028 CONMEBOL Copa America have yet to be announced. The FIFA international calendar does not specify the tournament schedule either. Still, it's expected to run from mid-June to mid-July 2028. For reference, the last edition in 2024, also hosted by the United States, was held from June 20 to July 14.
Interestingly, the 2028 Summer Olympics will also be staged in the U.S., mainly in Los Angeles, but Olympic soccer matches will occur across the country. The Olympics will span July 14 to July 30, with some events starting before the opening ceremony.
Where Might the 2028 Copa America Be Hosted?
No official host has been confirmed. Yet, rumors suggest the United States might once again stage the event, just like in 2024. Reports began surfacing in late 2025, with Adam Crafton of The Athletic revealing ongoing discussions about a U.S. venue. Although social media buzz reemerged recently, no firm announcements have followed.
If the U.S. hosts, it would mark the third time in five editions that the Copa America takes place there, after 2016 and 2024. Since 2015, when Chile hosted, the tournament hasn't been held outside Brazil or the United States. Argentina last hosted in 2011.
Which Teams Will Play in the 2028 Copa America?
All ten CONMEBOL members will participate, as usual. Additionally, guest teams usually join each tournament. If the U.S. hosts again, the typical invitees from CONCACAF—the United States, Canada, and Mexico—are almost certain to take part. In 2024, three more CONCACAF teams qualified through the Nations League: Jamaica, Panama, and Costa Rica.
The 2024 event featured 16 teams in total. Recent chatter on social media hints at a possible expansion to 20 teams in 2028. That would complicate the competition format and may require changes. It's unclear if these extra teams would come solely from CONCACAF or if other confederations might receive invitations.
How Often Does Copa America Happen?
Currently, Copa America is scheduled every four years, aligned to occur midway between FIFA World Cups, on even years. With World Cups in 2026 and 2030, the next Copa America fits in 2028.
Historically, the tournament was mostly held in odd-numbered years, typically the year after the World Cup, such as 2011 and 2015 following the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. There have also been extra editions, including the 2016 Centenario celebrating 100 years of CONMEBOL and the 2021 edition delayed from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
