Djokovic's Unexpected Defeat in Basel Clouds ATP Finals Prospects
Djokovic Faces Setback at Swiss Indoors in Basel
Novak Djokovic's bid to secure a record 19th appearance at the ATP Finals in Turin has taken a hit after an unexpected loss to Jan-Lennard Struff at the Swiss Indoors tournament. Returning to Basel after 15 years, the 39-year-old was defeated 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), marking his first loss against Struff in nine encounters.
Struff Reflects on Victory
"I knew I needed to go for it. There was only one way to play it. So, I was very, very happy," said world number 27 Jan-Lennard Struff. "I knew I had to play my best tennis to have a chance. The last eight times he beat me very, very easily. So, I'm very, very happy and pleased with the performance."
ATP Finals Qualification Tightens
The ATP Finals feature the top eight players of the year, and this defeat leaves Djokovic sitting 11th in the rankings. As a record 24-time Grand Slam winner, Djokovic's current position puts his qualification in doubt. He admitted to feeling some rustiness following his earlier win against Ugo Humbert but acknowledged the challenge ahead as he's now outside the top 10 for the first time since 2018.
Current Standings and Opportunities
- Rafael Jodar: Holds ninth place, the final qualifying spot.
- Jannik Sinner: Top-ranked but sidelined due to injury, won't participate.
- Djokovic: 319 points behind Jodar, with a chance to improve at the Paris Masters in November.
Djokovic aims to surpass Roger Federer by making his 19th appearance at the ATP Finals, a tournament he has won seven times. He missed the last two editions because of injury, and the last time he failed to qualify based on ranking was in 2017 due to injury struggles.
Confirmed Competitors and Basel Surprises
Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, and Ben Shelton have all secured spots for the Turin event from November 15-22. Yet, Shelton suffered an upset loss in Basel as well.
- Ben Shelton: Lost 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-1) to Jerome Kym.
- Jerome Kym: A Swiss wildcard ranked 222nd worldwide who caused the surprise victory.
