Kimi Antonelli Secures US GP Victory, Boosting F1 Championship Lead Amid Mercedes' Struggles

Kimi Antonelli Surprises with Dominant US GP Win for Mercedes

The Mercedes team appeared to be headed for a tough weekend at the Circuit of the Americas after Friday’s practice sessions showed a lackluster pace and handling issues. Their recent aerodynamic upgrades seemed to backfire, leaving both drivers frustrated and the car off balance.

Yet on Sunday, 19-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli stunned everyone by claiming victory, confidently extending his lead in the Formula 1 world championship.

Engineering Director Reflects on Turnaround

Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes’ trackside engineering director, described the transformation from Friday’s struggles to Sunday’s success as almost miraculous. He openly acknowledged how difficult it was for the engineering team to find solutions early in the weekend.

“Well done to Kimi and everyone in Brackley and Brixworth on the win. After Friday, a race victory simply didn’t look achievable given our single-lap and long-run pace, so it’s been a remarkable turnaround and a very satisfying result,” Shovlin said.

Challenges Linked to Recent Upgrades

The difficulties Mercedes faced trace back to their latest upgrade package introduced in Malaysia, which has made the W17 model tricky to set up properly. Driver George Russell had called the car “rubbish” after a disappointing finish, and Shovlin confirmed that the setup window had become very narrow, making it harder to optimize performance.

“There were encouraging signs with the car pace, although since the update it does feel like the set-up window has become a little harder to hit,” Shovlin admitted.

Divergent Results for Mercedes Drivers

The tight setup margin led to two very different outcomes for Mercedes’ drivers in Austin. While Antonelli managed to keep his tires in good condition and lead the race, Russell struggled from the start.

  • George Russell: Penalized for going off track on lap one, he faced a frustrating day. Despite a strong second stint start, he got stuck behind Oscar Piastri’s McLaren and couldn’t overtake.
  • Kimi Antonelli: Benefited from flawless pit strategy under pressure, sticking to a one-stop plan that paid off despite the bumpy Texas surface causing tire wear spikes.

Shovlin praised the team’s composure and strategic calls during the race.

“Operationally, the team did a very good job. The strategy decisions weren’t clear-cut, but we held our nerve, made the right call to stick with the one-stop, and the pitstops were solid,” he said.

Credit to Antonelli’s Performance

Ultimately, all credit goes to Kimi Antonelli for handling an unpredictable car and delivering a crucial win late in the season. Despite a tough Friday, his qualifying and race performances impressed the team.

“Most of all, Kimi should be incredibly pleased with his performances. It was a difficult Friday, but what he produced in qualifying and the race today was exceptional,” Shovlin commented.
