Alisson Fined £8,000 After Tunnel Incident Following Penalty Controversy

Alisson Becker has been hit with an £8,000 fine by the Football Association after his fury at a late penalty decision spilled over in the tunnel area following Liverpool’s match.

The Liverpool goalkeeper, usually one of the calmer figures on the pitch, lost his temper at full-time and vented his anger on the fourth official’s electronic numbers board as he made his way back towards the dressing rooms.

In a statement, the FA said: “It was alleged that the goalkeeper acted in an improper manner around the tunnel area after the final whistle. Alisson Becker has subsequently accepted the charge against him and received the standard penalty.” There is no suspension attached to the punishment.

The flashpoint stemmed from a controversial penalty awarded against Liverpool for a foul on Neco Williams. The challenge came after the defender had already got his shot away, with contact following the release of the ball. Alisson was visibly stunned by the decision on the pitch and his frustration clearly did not subside when the whistle went.

The chaos had been brewing even before the incident. The fourth official’s numbers board malfunctioned during a planned triple substitution by Andoni Iraola, causing an unexpected delay and adding to the sense of disorder on the touchline.

The pressure around the decision has not eased in the days since. The Key Match Incident (KMI) Panel has now ruled that referee Sam Barrott made the wrong call in awarding the spot-kick, a verdict that will do little to soothe Liverpool’s sense of injustice — or Alisson’s, given he has paid for the fallout with his wallet.
