Allegri Navigates Napoli's Challenges Before Inter Clash
Massimiliano Allegri sat down in front of the microphones and, before a ball had even been kicked at San Siro, diagnosed the city he now works in.
At Napoli, he said, it is “either over-excitement or depression.”
Three weeks into the Serie A season, he is trying to steer a straight line between the two.
From Como shock to San Siro stage
Napoli arrive in Milan bruised. The 2-1 home defeat to Como stung not just for the scoreline, but for the collateral damage.
Giovane limped off. Scott McTominay, already sidelined for several weeks after surgery to correct a small heart issue, will not be back any time soon. Alessandro Buongiorno and Luca Marianucci remain long-term absentees. For a side built to compete on multiple fronts, the margins have suddenly narrowed.
So when the first question in today’s press conference wondered aloud if this was still a Scudetto race for Napoli, Allegri heard the familiar soundtrack of hysteria.
“We are only in Week 3,” he reminded the room. The defeat to Como hurt, yes, but he refused to paint it as a collapse. “We’re disappointed to have lost to Como, but there must be balance, there are so many games still to be played. We didn’t even put in a bad performance.”
Now comes a very different kind of examination: Inter at San Siro on Saturday at 17.00 UK time (18.00 CEST), a meeting of the top two from the last two seasons and an early barometer of power.
“We go forward with confidence,” Allegri said, “then we can think about Arsenal and the Champions League.” One game at a time, at least in public.
Turning an injury crisis on its head
The injury list is long enough to unsettle any dressing room, but Allegri tried to twist the narrative.
“Injuries happen,” he said, before pointing to the calendar. After the international break, Napoli face nine matches in 26 days. A brutal run. A season-defining stretch.
So he framed the current absences as an ugly but useful reality: better now than in the middle of that storm, when rotation becomes survival and every fit body counts. If the medical staff can return key players in time for that spell, this early turbulence might be remembered as a necessary jolt rather than a fatal blow.
The message was clear: absorb the hit, stay calm, and be ready when the schedule really bites.
Vergara, responsibility and the limits of youth
With so many missing, attention naturally turned to Antonio Vergara. More minutes? A bigger role? A young player as the instant solution?
Allegri pushed back.
“I don’t think we should put too much responsibility onto the shoulders of Vergara,” he said. The midfielder has just 12 Napoli appearances. Talent is not the issue, timing is. “He’s a good player… we’ve got to take it easy.”
Against Como, Vergara stayed on the bench. Allegri pointed to the five-substitution rule and his choice to go in a different direction. It was a reminder that development in his teams is usually incremental, not romantic.
He did, however, highlight one key area where Napoli must grow quickly: “We are improving physically, I am happy with how the lads are training, now we have to make fewer errors in the matches.” The lapses that cost them against Como cannot travel to San Siro.
De Bruyne waiting, McTominay missing
Another name hovering over this start to the season is Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian has yet to start a game and is still pushing towards full fitness.
“He is improving,” Allegri said, but the absence of McTominay complicates everything in midfield. The Scot offers a specific blend of energy, aggression and vertical running that no one else in the squad quite replicates.
“I cannot ask anyone else for what we get from Scott,” Allegri admitted. “It’s a different player with different characteristics.”
De Bruyne’s integration will therefore require a new balance, not a simple plug-and-play replacement. Benoit Badiashile, at least, is in the squad and has impressed in training, adding another piece to the puzzle as Allegri reshapes the spine of his side on the fly.
Return to San Siro, and a clear Scudetto favourite
For Allegri, Saturday is not just another away game. It is a return to the stadium where he was fired by Milan last summer, a place that has seen both his triumphs and his exit.
“Playing in that stadium is always marvellous,” he said, and he meant it. He also knows the edge that comes when Inter and Napoli meet. “Inter and Napoli love to do battle.”
His demands for this particular battle were straightforward: “We need a good performance with fewer technical errors, because those are costly.” Como provided the warning. Inter will provide the punishment if Napoli repeat those mistakes.
Allegri did not hesitate when asked about the title picture. “Inter are the real favourites for the Scudetto,” he declared. No mind games, no disguises. Just a blunt assessment of where the power currently lies.
“We’ve got to be more careful, as we conceded two avoidable goals against Como. Head to head clashes are always difficult to win.” Especially against a side he openly anoints as the team to beat.
Building while others spend
Napoli’s summer has also shaped expectations. While other Serie A giants spent heavily, Napoli operated under the constraint of needing to sell before they could buy. The market never exploded in their favour.
Allegri refused to use that as a shield.
“There’s no point looking at the others, we need to focus on ourselves,” he said. He sounded content, or at least committed, to the group he has. “I’m pleased with the squad at our disposal, we’ve got to lay the foundations now for what will be the final push of the season, taking one step at a time.”
That is the crux of his early tenure in Naples: dampening the emotional swings, insisting on process in a city that lives for the instant rush of victory or the drama of defeat.
San Siro will not decide the Scudetto in Week 3. But it will show whether Allegri’s call for balance can survive 90 minutes against the team he calls favourites – and whether Napoli are ready to walk that tightrope without falling back into over-excitement or depression.
