Anderlecht Pursue Santi Garcia as Saliba Replacement

Anderlecht have wasted little time drawing up a response to the loss of Nathan Saliba. With the midfielder sold to Villarreal during the transfer window, the Belgian giants have fixed their gaze on Portugal – and on one of the Primeira Liga’s rising engines.

According to HLN, Anderlecht are exploring a move for Santi Garcia of Gil Vicente, a player whose stock has risen sharply over the past two seasons. Gil Vicente initially set the bar high, seeking a fee in excess of €10 million. That stance has softened slightly, but the ambition behind it remains clear: the club want Garcia to become the most expensive outgoing transfer in their history.

This is not a name plucked from nowhere. Garcia’s path has been a slow burn rather than a headline-grabbing sprint. Formed in Spain and schooled at Getafe, he managed just a single first-team appearance before the door to La Liga seemed to close on him.

In 2024, he walked through another. Garcia left Spanish football and joined Gil Vicente on a free transfer, a move that looked modest on paper but has since aged very well. He settled immediately, becoming a regular in his debut campaign: 30 matches, four goals, two assists. Solid numbers, but more importantly, a foothold.

Then came the leap. Last season, the 24-year-old midfielder produced what can only be called his breakout year. Across 34 games he struck six times and added three assists, but the numbers only tell part of the story. He evolved into a central figure, a player trusted to influence games rather than simply survive them.

That is the profile Anderlecht now need. Saliba’s departure has left a gap in the middle of the pitch and in the project itself. The Belgian side are not just hunting for a body; they are searching for a midfielder who can grow with them, carry weight in possession, and add goals from deep.

Gil Vicente know exactly what they have. That is why they pushed the valuation beyond €10 million and why, even with a slightly reduced asking price now being discussed, they remain intent on cashing in at a record level for the club.
