Bernard, with his scoring record and international experience, instantly becomes one of the standout names in that intake.

Because of Bernard’s age, he could not simply walk away from Crystal Palace as a free agent. The Gunners had to agree a compensation package with Palace to get the deal over the line, reflecting the training and development invested in him.
