Burkina Faso Faces FIFA Suspension After President Ibrahim Traore Threatens Football Federation Takeover Following Heavy Defeat

Burkina Faso Risks FIFA Ban After President Threatens Football Federation Takeover

The Burkina Faso national team faces a possible suspension by FIFA after President Ibrahim Traore warned of government intervention in the country's football federation. This threat came in the wake of a crushing 7-0 loss to Argentina in a friendly match held in Buenos Aires.

Disastrous Trip to Buenos Aires Exposes Logistical Problems

The severe defeat highlighted serious travel and organizational issues suffered by Burkina Faso’s squad. Delays due to transit visa complications and inefficient flight routes caused the team to endure several days of travel, arriving just hours before kickoff. Several key players based abroad were also missing from the squad.

These problems have drawn sharp criticism towards Colonel-Major Oumarou Sawadogo, head of the football federation, who is blamed for failing to meet the team's basic requirements.

President Traore Demands Major Changes

Captain Traore, who leads the transitional government, openly criticized the federation's management for neglecting the national team’s needs. Speaking to French media outlet RMC Sport, he said: "It is true that our football is sick, and we will find the remedy. To invest again, we must cure the disease. I believe we have major decisions to make this week so that things can move forward."

Traore also issued a stern warning to the federation’s leadership: "Last time, I told the federation president, Up until now we didn't want to interfere in your affairs, but now we have no choice. We have to do it, whether we get suspended or not. But if we intervene, it will be to get things organised and run properly."

Government Intervention Could Lead to International Suspension

This looming government takeover risks violating FIFA rules. Article 14 of the FIFA Statutes prohibits any third-party interference in national football federations. Should the government dissolve the current executive committee or install a parallel structure, FIFA would likely impose a suspension.

Similar actions against Kenya and Zimbabwe resulted in bans that barred their national teams from World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, stopped club participation in CAF competitions, and cut off FIFA Forward funding.
