Roberto De Zerbi Follows Pochettino’s Lead with Tottenham Squad Trip to Spain
De Zerbi Draws on Pochettino’s Approach at Tottenham
Roberto De Zerbi has taken his Tottenham squad to Spain for a team bonding trip amid a tough Premier League campaign. The Spurs boss seems to have taken a page from Mauricio Pochettino, who arranged a similar getaway seven years ago before the Champions League final.
Tottenham's start to the season has been frustrating, as they still search for their first league win. Their recent draw against Manchester United showed promise despite going down to 10 men after Rodrigo Bentancur’s red card. Even with heavy spending in the summer transfer window, De Zerbi is still working to find the right rhythm with his players.
Team Bonding Away from the Pitch
According to Football London, De Zerbi’s decision to take the team away mid-season is unusual but deliberate. He wants the players to connect more off the field by spending time together, sharing meals, and building chemistry. De Zerbi said,
"To work together, to stay together, to go for dinner together, to know better each other, because to be a team you have to know the team-mates, and be together."
This kind of trip is typically reserved for preseason or international breaks, so this move stands out. It mirrors Pochettino’s strategy from 2019, which helped Spurs build unity ahead of a major final.
A Chance to Reset and Build Chemistry
With over ten new signings this summer, it’s understandable that Tottenham’s squad is still finding its feet. Not every signing can instantly click, and there’s always an adjustment period when many players arrive and leave at once.
This trip offers an opportunity to speed up that process and strengthen bonds within the group. It might be exactly what Tottenham needs to turn their season around.
Looking Ahead
All eyes will be on Spurs as they prepare to face Coventry in their next Premier League match on Monday night. How the team responds after this bonding experience could shape their trajectory for the rest of the campaign.
