Edson Álvarez Rejects Kidnapping Allegations in Mexico

Edson Álvarez has publicly rejected claims linking him to an alleged kidnapping in Mexico, insisting his name is being dragged into a story that “has nothing to do” with him.

The West Ham midfielder and Mexico captain issued a strongly worded statement on social media after film producer Juan José López Ordoñez told Mexican outlet TV Notas he had been forced into a vehicle at gunpoint in the Polanco district of Mexico City in 2024.

López Ordoñez alleges he was kidnapped by relatives of Álvarez’s former father-in-law, Jonathan Toache Bedolla. He says he had been commissioned to produce a documentary on Álvarez’s life and was owed £150,000 for the project. According to López Ordoñez, Álvarez was not directly involved in the kidnapping itself, but was aware of the plot.

Álvarez has hit back.

“I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to associate my name with events, conflicts, or conduct that are entirely unrelated to me,” he wrote, making clear he is prepared to explore legal options.

He accused sections of the media of using his profile to inflate the story, saying his name and image had “repeatedly been used to generate greater media attention around a situation that has nothing to do with me”.

For months, he said nothing. Now, he says the line has been crossed.

“Until now, I had chosen not to respond. However, there are limits, and attributing knowledge, responsibility, or involvement in matters of this nature to me without presenting a single piece of evidence clearly crosses that line.”

Álvarez also criticised outlets he believes are chasing headlines over accuracy, accusing them of prioritising “sensationalism” instead of “accuracy and truth”. He stressed he intends to keep his focus on his family and his career.

On the pitch, the 26-year-old has become a key figure for club and country since making his Mexico debut in 2017 and later taking the armband. He joined West Ham from Ajax in 2023 and has already clocked 74 appearances for the Hammers, though this season he has featured just once, in the Carabao Cup against Portsmouth.

The legal and sporting paths now run in parallel. Álvarez wants one of them cleared of his name as quickly as possible.
