FC Cincinnati Sign Tyrell Malacia from Manchester United
FC Cincinnati have moved decisively in the market, snapping up former Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia on a free transfer in a deal that underlines the club’s growing ambition.
The 27-year-old Netherlands international, once viewed as one of Europe’s brightest attacking full-backs, arrives in MLS after his contract at Old Trafford expired at the end of last season. He has signed a deal that runs until next June, with an option that could keep him in Cincinnati through the 2027-28 campaign.
It is a calculated bet on top-level experience.
Malacia joined United from Feyenoord in 2022 and walked into one of the most scrutinised dressing rooms in world football. His time in Manchester never fully caught fire, disrupted by injuries that restricted him to 50 appearances across all competitions. When he did play, he showed the aggressive front-foot defending and sharp use of the ball that had persuaded United to bring him over from the Eredivisie.
Now he gets a reset.
“We are excited to add a player of Tyrell's experience,” said general manager Chris Albright, framing the move as a statement of intent as much as a squad upgrade. “He's played at the highest levels of the game and understands the demands of competing in those environments. His quality on the ball, defensive instincts, and team-first mentality is a welcome addition to the group and we're happy to have him in Cincinnati.”
For Cincinnati, this is about more than a name with Premier League pedigree. It is about adding a defender who has lived the pressure of title races, European nights and international football, and asking him to channel that into a league that increasingly attracts players in their prime rather than on their farewell tour.
If Malacia stays fit and finds rhythm, MLS attacks will quickly learn how unforgiving he can be down that left flank.
