Gary O’Neil Prepares Squad for Weekend Match
Gary O’Neil will walk into the weekend with a squad that looks stronger on paper, but still short of full power.
The head coach confirmed that midfielder Florentino Luis is edging closer to a return and could be involved on Sunday, though he is not yet fully up to speed. Azor Matusiwa, Jack Taylor and Jaden Philogene, however, remain unavailable and will all miss the game.
“They’re not quite back,” O’Neil admitted of the injured trio, before stressing that the overall picture is positive. The mood around the training ground reflects that. “Really pleased with where the group is at, we’re in a good place.”
Palacios set for debut
The real jolt of excitement comes from the new arrival. Exequiel Palacios, fresh from major honours at club and international level, is expected to feature.
“Yeah, I’m sure you’ll see him on Sunday,” O’Neil said. No tease, no coyness. Just a clear indication that the fanbase will get an early look at a midfielder with serious pedigree. O’Neil called him “an incredible signing by the football club,” a line that underlines how significant this move feels inside the building.
The coach spoke with clear pride about the work that went into reshaping his squad over the summer. The club have pushed hard to sell a vision and, crucially, to back it.
“You can feel the belief around the place just constantly growing and constantly improving,” he said, pointing to a summer that has delivered both profile and depth.
Statement of intent
O’Neil sees the transfer business as a direct reflection of the club’s ambition and of the backing he has received.
“The ambition that this place has, the support that they give coaches and the direction of travel, is something that, as soon as it came around, I knew I wanted to be part of,” he said.

Issa Diop and Sasa Lukic were singled out as examples of the calibre now walking through the door, joined by talent sourced from across the globe. “I’m really grateful for the owners’ backing. I know they are committed to making this club as special as they can.”
For O’Neil, it has been, in his own words, a “fantastic summer for the club”. The challenge now passes to the stands. He wants the supporters to “carry the excitement” with them for as long as possible, to turn transfer momentum into something louder and more intimidating on matchdays.
Abraham talk cools, but window still alive
One name dominated the rumour mill: Tammy Abraham. Reports of a loan deal being agreed with Aston Villa have gathered pace, but O’Neil was quick to apply the brakes.
“No update, as far as I am aware,” he said. “Sounds like you’re further along with that than I am. Nothing to report on that.”
The line was delivered with a hint of amusement, but also with intent. The club are clearly active, but O’Neil will not fuel speculation he cannot yet confirm.
What he did make clear is that the recruitment drive is not over. The club are “hopefully not finished” in the market and are “still working hard to try to improve the group”.
The squad is stronger. The belief is louder. The question now is simple: how far can this revamped side push that ambition once the whistle blows on Sunday?
