Gibbs-White Takes England Spot as Palmer Injured

Morgan Gibbs-White is poised to step back into the England picture, with the Nottingham Forest playmaker set for a recall ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures after Cole Palmer’s latest fitness setback.

Palmer is expected to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s squad with a minor injury, opening the door for Gibbs-White to be drafted in, according to reports. It is a cruel twist for a player who has been fighting his way back into the national conversation.

The 24-year-old completed the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, another outing in what has been a strong personal start to the season. After a summer on the sidelines internationally following his omission from England’s World Cup squad, Palmer has been central to Chelsea’s early campaign: six starts from seven league games, four goals, two assists, and a clear sense that he had re-established himself as one of Tuchel’s go-to attackers.

Now, just as his England return was within his grasp, he is forced to step back again.

Tuchel had made no secret of the challenge he set for Palmer on his recall. Before the injury, the England manager openly said the forward had a “point to prove” and needed “to step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination.” This was meant to be the window where Palmer rewrote the narrative after that contentious World Cup snub.

Instead, his wait goes on. Palmer has not played for his country since a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan in March, and this latest issue pushes his international ambitions further down the road.

His fitness has long been under the microscope. A recurring groin problem disrupted much of his 2025-26 campaign, a situation that even baffled his then Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, now in charge at Manchester City, who publicly questioned how the problem had dragged on.

Palmer’s misfortune, though, brings a timely opportunity for Gibbs-White.

Initially left out of Tuchel’s squad, the 26-year-old was already on the brink. Tuchel admitted on Friday that the Forest midfielder had come “incredibly close” to making the original cut. That near miss now looks like a temporary pause rather than a rejection.

Gibbs-White has started the domestic season with purpose: one goal and two assists in five league matches, his influence growing as Forest look to stabilise themselves in the top flight. His last taste of senior international football came in October 2025, when he featured in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales. This recall offers him a chance to show he belongs at this level on a more permanent basis.

And he will walk into a camp facing a brutal schedule.

England are braced for a demanding extended international break, with four matches packed into a tight window. Tuchel’s side open against World Cup holders Spain at Wembley on Saturday, 26 September, a fixture that will test both tactical discipline and mental resilience. From there, England head to the Czech Republic on 29 September, before staying on the road for a clash with Croatia on 3 October. The run concludes back at Wembley, with the Czechs visiting again on 6 October.

For Palmer, this break was supposed to be a stage for redemption. For Gibbs-White, it now becomes something else entirely: a rare chance to turn “incredibly close” into indispensable.
