Barcelona Eyes Alessandro Bastoni as Defensive Solution

Barcelona’s search for a long-term defensive pillar has swung back towards a familiar name. In Italy, Alessandro Bastoni is not officially on the market. In Spain, the conversation is very different.

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the Inter Milan centre-back is now open to a move in the next transfer window. Bastoni is described as feeling settled and comfortable at Inter, yet he has not closed the door on a change of scenery. At 27, with his prime years in full view, the timing is starting to matter.

The key step comes next: Bastoni reportedly wants to speak directly with Barça coach Hansi Flick. That conversation would be decisive in judging whether a switch to Catalonia works for both player and club. Flick, for his part, has long made his stance clear. He is a firm admirer of the Italian international and, in the summer, was said to have backed a move to bring him to Barcelona.

Back then, the deal never moved beyond the rumour stage. Various reports indicated that Bastoni himself chose to remain in Milan, preferring continuity at a club where he is deeply embedded. Now the question is whether his thinking has shifted.

Inter’s position adds another layer of tension. Bastoni’s contract at San Siro runs until 30 June 2028. That is a long commitment on paper, but from a business standpoint it also means the next transfer window becomes one of the Nerazzurri’s best chances to secure a substantial fee. Leave it much later and their leverage starts to erode.

The sporting cost, though, would be severe. Bastoni is a cornerstone of Cristian Chivu’s side, an undisputed starter and a constant presence this season with eleven appearances already in all competitions. Losing him would rip a hole in Inter’s defensive structure and force a rethink at the back.

Barcelona view that same profile as the solution to their own problems. Flick wants a centre-back who can lock down the position next to Pau Cubarsi for years, giving the team a stable axis to build around. Right now Gerard Martin most often fills that role, but the depth chart is under strain. Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen are both out injured, leaving Barça exposed and pushing defensive recruitment higher up the agenda.

So the situation tightens. Inter must weigh the value of a key starter against the realities of the market. Barcelona must decide how aggressively to move for a defender they have already identified as a priority. And somewhere between Milan and Barcelona, Alessandro Bastoni is preparing for a conversation with Hansi Flick that could reshape both clubs’ defensive futures.
