Holger Rune's Return: Japan Open Draw Revealed for First ATP Match Since Achilles Injury

Holger Rune Set for ATP Tour Comeback at Japan Open

Just over a week after his successful Davis Cup return, Holger Rune is gearing up for his first ATP Tour match since suffering a torn Achilles tendon. The 23-year-old Dane, sidelined for nearly a year, made a strong impression by winning both matches against Bulgaria in the Davis Cup, defeating Iliyan Radulov and Grigor Dimitrov.

Rune’s last ATP-level appearance was at the Stockholm Open in October 2025. Now, he will take to the courts in Tokyo for the Japan Open, looking to climb back up the rankings after falling to 188th from as high as fourth in the world.

Japan Open Draw Details

Rune’s opening round at the Japan Open sets up a first-time meeting with French player Kyrian Jacquet. The challenge escalates quickly; a second-round victory would pit him against either Casper Ruud or Luciano Darderi.

If Rune reaches the quarterfinals, he could face familiar foes like Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti, both players he has beaten before. Should he advance to the semifinals, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz seems the likely opponent.

Making it to the final would mean a showdown with either US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe or young star Rafael Jodar, who is just 20 years old.

Rune’s History at the Japan Open

This marks Rune’s third time competing in the Japan Open. He impressed during his 2024 debut by reaching the semifinals, narrowly losing to Arthur Fils. Last year, he made it to the quarterfinals, which means he will have 100 ATP points to defend in this tournament.

Upcoming Points Defense

After Tokyo, Rune faces a series of tournaments where he'll need to protect his ranking points:

  • Shanghai Masters 2026: Defending 200 ATP points following a quarterfinal run in 2025
  • Stockholm Open 2026: Defending 100 points from a semifinal finish, despite having suffered his Achilles injury here last year
