The anger is not about one transfer link. It is about everything that came before it.
Four months without a goal – and total protection
Last season, Alvarez went almost four months without scoring. For a striker at a club with Atlético’s ambitions, that kind of drought usually invites public criticism, tactical demotions, and whispers about replacements.
None of that came from Simeone.
The coach shielded him relentlessly. No barbed comments in press conferences. No subtle digs about needing more. Just unwavering backing, game after game, as he insisted Alvarez remained central to his long-term vision.
“This is his guy,” Kitromilides explained, stressing how personally Simeone had invested in the player. There was “never a bad word from Simeone, constantly backed and supported 100 per cent.” Inside the club, Alvarez was spoken of as “their most important player, their franchise player. The whole project is built around Julian Alvarez.”
Now that same player is pushing for Barcelona. For Simeone, it feels like a betrayal.
Training absence, transfer noise
The tension escalated when Alvarez missed training sessions last week, a move that only poured fuel on the transfer speculation. In a squad that has long prided itself on sacrifice and discipline, that kind of absence does not go unnoticed.
He did report back on Sunday, returning to work with his teammates, but the atmosphere had already shifted. The trust that once surrounded him has been replaced by suspicion and frustration, even as the club tries to pull the situation back from the brink.

So the Catalans have started to pivot. Reports indicate they are closing in on Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal, a forward seen as a more realistic signing in the current circumstances. It is not a change of taste, but a concession to the market and to Atlético’s refusal to yield.
Atlético try to restore order
Inside the Metropolitano, the club is trying to project calm. Publicly, the message is one of normality, professionalism, and reintegration, even as the reality behind closed doors feels anything but.
Alvarez is still expected to be included in the squad for Atlético’s upcoming fixture. On the pitch, they need him. Off it, they need to show that one player, however important, does not dictate the club’s direction.
