Justin Gaethje Stands Up for Ilia Topuria After UFC Freedom 250 Finish
Gaethje Backs Topuria Following UFC Freedom 250
Justin Gaethje, the UFC lightweight champion, spoke out in defense of his opponent Ilia Topuria after their clash at UFC Freedom 250. Despite the fight ending with Topuria's corner stopping the bout in the fourth round via TKO, Gaethje insisted that Topuria did not give up on the stool.
The main event in June ended with Topuria's team throwing in the towel due to the damage he had taken over the fight. Many fans and fighters have suggested that Topuria quit, but Gaethje disagrees strongly.
Gaethje's Take on the Stoppage
On the One Night with Steiny podcast, Gaethje clarified the situation. He said Topuria’s body was too damaged to keep going, and it was his corner's responsibility to protect him.
"He didn’t quit on the stool, his body was too compromised to continue fighting. He didn’t make the call, his coaches made the call because they’re there to protect him. My coaches are in my corner to protect me in those times," Gaethje explained.
What About a Rematch?
The question remains whether a rematch between Gaethje and Topuria will happen next. While Arman Tsarukyan appears more deserving of a title shot after six straight wins, the UFC often prioritizes the most marketable fights.
If the promotion views a rematch between Gaethje and Topuria as the biggest lightweight fight available, that match could be booked. Tsarukyan might then have to wait longer for his chance at the belt.
First, though, Gaethje himself hasn’t decided if he’ll continue fighting or retire. Despite winning, he took significant damage during the fight with Topuria and may choose to step away from the sport. The UFC is giving him time to consider his future.
