Lazio's Transfer Dilemma: Icardi vs. Gattuso's Vision
Lazio’s transfer window did not close with the market. Not really. In Rome, the calendar says September, but the club are still shopping – this time in the free-agent aisle.
With Diogo Leite already through the door on a free, the Biancocelesti have room to manoeuvre. Two slots remain open on their official Serie A squad list after Patric and Luca Pellegrini were left out, and that space has sparked a debate at the top of the club.
At the heart of it: Mauro Icardi.
Lotito tempted by Icardi name
Claudio Lotito has never been shy about a big opportunity, especially one that doesn’t come with a transfer fee attached. According to Corriere dello Sport, via TuttoMercatoWeb, the Lazio president is genuinely intrigued by the idea of bringing in Icardi, currently unattached after his spell at Galatasaray.
A proven finisher. A famous name. A free signing. On paper, it ticks every presidential box.
But football is played on grass, not balance sheets.
Gattuso’s system vs Icardi’s profile
On the touchline in Udine, Gennaro Gattuso cut his familiar figure – arms folded, eyes burning, barking instructions as Lazio faced Udinese at the Stadio Friuli on September 7. His team, his ideas, his system. That’s where the tension lies.
Gattuso is not sold on the Icardi move. Far from it.
When he took the job, he was clear about what he wanted through the middle: a central striker who could run, press, stretch defences, and live off more than just penalty-box instincts. That demand led to the late-summer signing of Andrea Pinamonti, a forward whose mobility fits the blueprint.
For Gattuso, the priority now is simple – get Pinamonti fully match-fit, build the attacking structure around his movement, and avoid reshaping the team around a static No. 9. In that context, Icardi is not a dream signing. He is an option. A low-priority one.
The allure of a poacher with Icardi’s résumé is obvious. The fit inside Gattuso’s high-energy scheme is far less so.
Bissouma enters the frame
While the Icardi question hangs over the forward line, another name has surfaced in midfield: Yves Bissouma.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton midfielder is on Lazio’s radar as they look at ways to reinforce the centre of the pitch after recent injuries. Bissouma, also a free agent, offers a different kind of solution – legs, aggression, and depth in an area that can quickly become exposed over a long Serie A season.
The interest is there, the profile makes sense, and the market conditions are favourable. But there is no stampede.
Time on Lazio’s side
Despite the open squad spots and the availability of experienced players like Icardi and Bissouma, Lazio are not rushing to pull the trigger. The club intend to use the coming weeks to judge the squad’s balance, the fitness of key players, and the real urgency of adding another big personality to the dressing room.
Lotito sees an opportunity. Gattuso sees a project that still needs clarity and cohesion before any late additions walk into Formello.
The question now is not whether Lazio can sign Icardi or Bissouma. It is whether they dare to disturb the tactical path Gattuso has chosen, or stay patient and let this version of Lazio grow on its own terms.
