LeBron James Orchestrates 76ers' Offense in Debut with New Star-Loaded Lineup
LeBron James Directs 76ers' Offensive Flow in First Preseason Appearance
Philadelphia's offense appeared smooth and coordinated during the first game featuring LeBron James alongside a star-packed roster. The team’s new lineup includes Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Jaylen Brown. This combination raised the question of who would handle the ball most often.
LeBron James made his preseason debut with the 76ers on Thursday against the Brooklyn Nets, showcasing an early answer by taking on the point forward role. The offense flowed efficiently from tip-off despite the team eventually falling 114-108.
James Controls Playmaking
The ball frequently went through James, who facilitated the offense effectively. He assisted on two of Philadelphia's first three baskets, including a slick no-look pass to Edgecombe along the baseline under the hoop.
Another early highlight featured a "hockey assist" from James. He bounced a pick-and-roll pass to Embiid on the wing, who then fed Brown for an easy dunk.
The 76ers displayed sharp ball movement and looked far from a team playing its first game together, shooting 7 of 8 from the field early on.
James Prefers Passing Over Scoring
James took a backseat scoring-wise at first, delaying his first shot until less than five minutes remained in the first quarter. His opening points came via a drive that earned him two free throws.
He ended the first quarter with four points—all from the line—and five assists. The 76ers held a narrow 33-32 lead, with Maxey leading the charge with 10 points.
His first field goal came later as a reverse layup on a clever pass from Maxey. By halftime, the 76ers were up 58-56, with James posting 10 points (eight from free throws), five assists, four rebounds, two turnovers, and one steal in 18 minutes before resting for the second half.
Maxey and Brown Shine; Embiid Struggles with Turnovers
- Tyrese Maxey: Led first half scoring with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting
- Joel Embiid: Scored 6 points, grabbed 3 rebounds, but committed 7 turnovers by halftime
- Jaylen Brown: Added 8 points on 2-of-4 shooting in the first half, finishing the game with 18 points
The 76ers shot 57% in the first half (16 of 28) with assists on 12 of their 16 made shots. Ball control was an issue, as the team turned the ball over 14 times before halftime, after which the bench took over.
While this was only a preseason game, it gave a glimpse into how Philadelphia’s offense might operate during the regular season, with LeBron James running the offense as a point forward.
