Liverpool Targets Senegalese Duo as Transfer Window Closes
Liverpool’s window has drifted along in low gear. Now, with the clock ticking towards the September 1 deadline, it’s threatening to explode into life – and Senegal could be right at the heart of it.
Liverpool offered Camara as market opens up
Ben Jacobs reports that Liverpool have been offered Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara as a late-window option, a move that would add fresh legs to Andoni Iraola’s engine room just days after Curtis Jones’ departure to Inter Milan.
Camara isn’t being dangled in front of Liverpool alone. Jacobs says Monaco have also put his name to Chelsea, while Crystal Palace saw a bid rejected earlier this month. The French club’s stance is starting to shift, though.
With Monaco having reached an agreement in principle to sign Cruz Azul midfielder Erik Lira in a deal worth around €10m including add-ons, journalist Luca Bendoni reports that the Ligue 1 side now need to move on a non-EU player before completing that transfer. Camara is firmly in that conversation as a potential sacrifice.
For Liverpool, the opportunity lands at a convenient moment. Jones’ sale has left a gap in central midfield, even with the club keen to accelerate the development of highly rated youngster Trey Nyoni. A late, opportunistic move for Camara would fit a familiar Anfield pattern: a market opening appears, and Liverpool move quickly.
Iraola’s priority: width first, but room for more
Publicly, Iraola has been clear about where he wants reinforcements. Speaking before Liverpool’s clash with Nottingham Forest, he underlined that wide areas have been the priority.
“The word is ‘ideally’, ideally is the magic word,” he said when asked if there were other positions he would like to strengthen. “In the end, there are certain things that you can do, certain things that we don’t know if we can do. But it’s true that the priority has been to strengthen in the wide areas.
“Still, we have four, five days, I’m sure if we can improve other areas, we will.”
The first part of that brief looks close to being ticked off. Liverpool have finally agreed a deal with PSG for Bradley Barcola after a summer-long pursuit, adding pace and creativity to Iraola’s flanks.
Yet the story doesn’t end there.
Double Senegal swoop on the cards?
Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr has long been on Liverpool’s radar, and the links have flared up again. The Independent’s Miguel Delaney reported that Liverpool are still pursuing the 28-year-old despite new Palace boss Pierre Sage insisting he is not for sale.
There has been confusion over the level of Liverpool’s interest. Initial claims suggested a £50m bid had been rejected, but TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey has since been told that no formal offer went in. Instead, Liverpool made an enquiry, and it is Sarr’s camp who have pushed the player towards Anfield, hoping to turn that enquiry into a concrete proposal.
Into this swirl stepped Senegalese journalist La Loumance, who hinted that Liverpool could go even further. Posting on X, he suggested Camara is “not the only Senegalese who could sign with Liverpool,” pointing directly at the possibility of a double move for both the Monaco midfielder and Sarr before the deadline.
For a club that has already enjoyed huge success with Senegalese talent in recent years, the prospect of another Anfield-Senegal axis will not go unnoticed.
Quiet window poised for a frantic finish
Up to now, Liverpool’s business has been measured. Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz have arrived on permanent deals, while Ronald Araujo has joined on loan from Barcelona to bolster the defence. Solid work, but hardly seismic.
Behind the scenes, though, the pace is quickening. Barcola is on his way. Camara has been offered. Sarr’s representatives are pushing hard. Monaco are ready to cash in on a non-EU player to unlock the Lira deal. And Liverpool’s recruitment team know they still need at least one more midfielder to balance Iraola’s squad.
A trusted source has already indicated that any late midfield signing is likely to be someone Iraola knows well, which only sharpens the intrigue around Camara and any other names that may yet surface.
Liverpool’s window started quietly. The final days will not be quiet at all.
