Mainoo: The Free Addition Outshining £150m
The transfer window is staggering towards its close, but Manchester United’s weekend offered a reminder that not every solution comes with a price tag. In a summer when the club have poured £150m into reshaping their midfield, the standout in a 5-2 dismantling of Ipswich was the one who cost nothing at all: Kobbie Mainoo, straight off the academy pitches of Cheadle and Stockport.
Old Trafford has seen expensive midfielders come and go. On Sunday it watched a homegrown one run the game.

Mainoo, still only 21, produced the kind of all‑round midfield display that makes accountants wince and academy coaches beam. He knitted United’s play together, broke up attacks, and seemed to be everywhere the game demanded him.
Harry Maguire, positioned perfectly to judge from behind, did not bother hiding his admiration.
“I thought he was brilliant, Kobbie,” the defender said, highlighting how little football Mainoo has actually had in recent months. With limited pre-season minutes, this should have been a rusty outing. Instead, it looked like a statement.
Maguire pointed to the work being done by Michael Carrick and his staff, and not just on the ball. “His work without the ball has improved so much since Michael has been in,” he said, calling that shift “probably credit to Michael and his staff.”
The praise did not stop there. In Maguire’s eyes, Mainoo is morphing into something far more intimidating than a tidy passer.
“Without the ball now, he’s becoming a real monster in there,” Maguire said. “He wins a lot of second balls. He wins a lot of duels. You won’t want to play against him in there and that’s the biggest compliment I can give to him from playing and watching him behind.”
For a defender, that is the gold standard: a midfielder you are glad is in front of you and not running at you.
Maguire also struck a note of realism. Careers at this level are never straight lines, especially at a club that devours narratives as quickly as United.
“He’s so young,” he said. “If we want him to play for this club for another 10 years, there’s going to be times where he’s going to go through a patch like with Rashy and myself, but that’s part and parcel.”
What reassures Maguire is Mainoo’s temperament as much as his talent. “He’s really level-headed, he’s really composed, he has great belief in his ability,” the defender added, convinced United have a midfielder built for the long haul. “He’s going to be a magnificent play for this club for many, many years.”
On a day when United’s expensive rebuild flexed its muscles, the loudest message came from the academy. The money has been spent. The system, though, may have already produced the player who defines their next decade.
