Man City Faces Severe Penalty That Could Mean Relegation, Inside Source Reveals
Manchester City Confronts Potential Catastrophic Penalty
Manchester City is staring down a grim prospect if their appeal against financial misconduct charges fails. The club was found guilty of 114 breaches over nearly a decade, from 2009 to 2018, leading to an ongoing legal clash with the Premier League that began in 2023.
The appeal process is currently active following a harsh Premier League statement in September. Insiders have shared details with the Daily Mail on what punishments might be imposed if the guilty verdict remains unchanged.
Possible Punishments Looming for City
The Premier League plans to reveal sanctions before the appeal concludes, with a deadline set for December 25. The final ruling from the commission is anticipated by mid-January. Punishments speculated include point deductions, transfer restrictions, or even removal from the top division.
While expulsion from the Premier League seems unlikely, a heavy points deduction is expected that could effectively ensure Manchester City's drop to the EFL Championship. Dropping them to League Two would cause widespread disruption, harming both the Premier League and EFL.
Journalist Oliver Holt reports that sources indicate the punishment will likely involve a harsh points penalty combined with a substantial fine. Another deduction could keep the club in the second tier for at least another season. Though the EFL is not forced to accept this, they are predicted to do so, allowing the club time to restructure.
UEFA's Potential European Ban
Just days ago, Colombian reporter Cesar Augusto Londono revealed that UEFA might ban the club from European contests if the appeal fails. According to Londono's post on X, UEFA is close to announcing a 7 to 10-year exclusion from competitions like the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League due to the initial findings of 115 financial violations.
If relegated and stuck in the Championship for an additional year, it could be around three years before Manchester City even qualifies for continental tournaments again. A lengthy European suspension would extend that period considerably, raising questions about player commitment to the club without Champions League opportunities.
