Manchester United’s search for a left-back has hit its first hard stop of deadline week. The door to Ian Maatsen is shut, bolted and, by the sound of it, not reopening any time soon.
United have been working the market for cover on the left side of defence before the window closes, while also juggling the possibility of needing a new striker if Joshua Zirkzee moves on. Zirkzee has already turned down Fiorentina, but Juventus are circling, proposing a €2.5m loan with a €30m option to buy at the end of the season.
The striker situation can wait. Left-back is the position where United can act immediately without clearing space first – and over the weekend they tried.
United ask the question, Villa give the answer
Journalist Pete O’Rourke revealed that United made an enquiry for Aston Villa’s Dutch full-back Ian Maatsen, the 24-year-old who has quickly become a key part of Unai Emery’s plans.
The initial hope at Old Trafford was simple: test Villa’s resolve, see if there was any wiggle room, and move fast if the numbers made sense.
The response from Villa Park was emphatic.
Sky Sports reporter Danyal Khan outlined the stance. Villa do not want to sell. Not now, not in this window. Instead, they are preparing to reward Maatsen with a new contract, a clear signal of how central they see him to their project.
Khan detailed how United “explored potential availability” but stressed that Villa intend to offer new terms soon and have no interest in cashing in. United, he added, will keep scanning the market, ready to strike if the right opportunity appears before Tuesday’s deadline, while trying to balance short-term needs with longer-term targets.
So United nudged the door. Villa slammed it shut.
Romano: “Untouchable”
By Monday lunchtime, Fabrizio Romano removed any lingering doubt. The transfer specialist confirmed that United’s interest was real, but the outcome is final.
“Aston Villa consider Ian Maatsen as key player; untouchable and he will not be sold this summer,” he reported. “Manchester United were among clubs interested but #AVFC will not sell Maatsen. Decision made.”
No negotiation. No drawn-out saga. Just a flat refusal from a club determined to keep hold of a defender they see as non-negotiable.
For United, it’s another left-back target effectively off the table. Alejandro Balde is also not expected to move, with the 22-year-old intent on staying at Barcelona.
Short-term scramble, long-term plan
That leaves United in an awkward but familiar position: 36 hours to go, a clear need identified, and a shrinking list of realistic options.
There is, however, a longer game in motion. Ben Jacobs has reported that United already have the “buy in” of Newcastle defender Lewis Hall over a future move, with the suggestion that a deal could be struck in the summer of 2027.
That timeline is striking. It hints at a club willing to wait for what they see as the right profile, even if it means patching things up in the meantime or, potentially, not signing anyone at all in that position before this window closes.
So the picture is this: Maatsen is off-limits, Balde is staying put, and the clock is ticking. United may yet spring a late surprise at left-back, but if they don’t, the message from this window will be clear.
The quick fix was there to be chased. The long-term bet might be the one they’re really prepared to make.
