Manchester United Sign Liverpool's Isaac Konde in Bold Academy Move
Manchester United have struck an agreement to sign 16-year-old Liverpool midfielder Isaac Konde, in a rare youth-level raid on their historic rivals.
The deal, reported by Fabrizio Romano, follows what are understood to be the final formalities being completed in the last 24 hours, clearing the way for Konde to swap Kirkby for Carrington and join United’s academy set-up.
Konde has featured six times for Liverpool in the Under-18s Premier League this season, registering one assist. Still in the very early stages of his development, he has been viewed as one of the promising midfielders in Liverpool’s youth ranks, and his move across the divide underlines how aggressively United are reshaping their academy.
This is not an isolated piece of business. It is part of a broader reset.
United’s academy reshuffle gathers pace
United have seen a steady flow of young talent leave in recent weeks, forcing a rethink and a rapid response in the market.
Premier League champions Arsenal moved decisively in the summer window, taking Habeeb Ogunneye and James Scanlon from United on permanent deals. Both were highly regarded internally, and their departures served as a jolt: United could no longer assume their best prospects would simply stay put.
The exits did not stop there. Striker Louie Bradbury also departed, joining Stoke City on a permanent transfer. The 17-year-old signed a two-year deal with the Championship club, which includes an option for an additional year through the 2028/29 campaign.
United marked his exit with a detailed club statement, underlining both his progress and the sense of loss at academy level. Bradbury, Shrewsbury-born, arrived at United at Under-14s level and earned his scholarship in 2025. He made five appearances for the Under-18s in the 2024/25 season, including a late substitute outing in the FA Youth Cup fourth round for Adam Lawrence’s side.
Last season he hit eight goals in the Under-18 Premier League and also stepped up to feature at Premier League 2 level. United closed their farewell by wishing him well for the next stage of his career, but the message between the lines was clear: others will follow him out, and the club must be ready.
Konde’s arrival is one such response.
A market that never sleeps
United have not confined their search to Merseyside. They pushed to land Leicester City youngster Louis Page as part of the same academy drive, only to run into a familiar obstacle: the clock.
Talks progressed but the two clubs failed to reach an agreement before the deadline. Page stays in League One with Leicester, and United are left to file that one under “near miss”.
The pattern is unmistakable. United are losing prospects, but they are also swinging hard to bring in new ones, often from other top academies. Konde’s switch from Liverpool is the most eye-catching example yet.
A 16-year-old crossing the divide between Anfield and Old Trafford at youth level will not dominate the back pages like a senior transfer. Inside the walls of both clubs, though, moves like this matter. They shape the next generation, tilt the balance of talent, and hint at which recruitment department is getting the sharper edge.
For United, the question now is simple: will this flurry of academy deals, headlined by Konde’s arrival, be remembered as the start of a new production line or just another reshuffle in a never-ending rebuild?
