Michael Owen Says Man Utd Have ‘Tried Everything’ in Coaching Role as Michael Carrick’s Future Uncertain
Man United’s Search for Stability in Coaching
Manchester United have explored numerous options in their head coach role, ranging from Jose Mourinho to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Michael Owen recently told GOAL that the club’s habit of constant managerial changes doesn’t reflect well on the team, especially with speculation swirling around Michael Carrick's position.
The Legacy Left by Sir Alex Ferguson
When Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 after securing his 13th Premier League title, he left behind a monumental legacy. His 27 years at Old Trafford brought both domestic dominance and European glory, including the unforgettable 1999 Treble.
Short-Lived Successors and Recent Coaching Changes
Since Ferguson’s departure, no manager has lasted more than three years. David Moyes lasted just eight months, and Solskjaer came close with 168 games. Meanwhile, Carrick, initially an interim choice, has managed 17 matches so far and earned a two-year contract following a strong finish last season that secured Champions League football.
Experiments With Different Types of Managers
United’s attempts to find the right fit have included big names like Mourinho and Louis van Gaal, former players such as Solskjaer and Carrick, and even younger talents like Ruben Amorim. Despite this, problems persist beyond coaching, making it unclear what replacing Carrick would achieve.
Michael Owen’s Take on the Situation
“They've tried absolutely everything. The one time it actually worked was with Carrick last season; he got more points than any other manager on average. So why change things? It’s not a good look to keep chopping and changing. It doesn’t bring results. I think you should let him grow. He’s young but has proven he can deliver big results consistently.”
Owen emphasizes that frequent managerial swaps haven’t produced success and warns against a weak board rushing to sack Carrick.
Upcoming Fixtures Could Decide Carrick’s Fate
Carrick remains in charge after a 1-1 draw with 10-man Tottenham, but faces a tough schedule ahead. Key away games include:
- October 13: Champions League match at Atletico Madrid
- October 18: Premier League clash against Leeds United
- European game against Cesc Fabregas’ Como
- October 31: Premier League trip to Chelsea
This run could be critical in determining whether the club sticks with Carrick or looks elsewhere.
