Novak Djokovic Shares Fitness Update Ahead of China Open Return After US Open Upset

Novak Djokovic Ready for China Open After Unexpected US Open Loss

Novak Djokovic says he is feeling well as he prepares for his opening match at the China Open, marking his first tournament since his surprising defeat at the US Open. The Serbian star, seeded sixth in Beijing, faces Nuno Borges in his first round.

Recent Setback at US Open

At the end of August, Djokovic suffered a shocking early exit from the US Open, losing to Mariano Navone in the first round. Despite the setback, Djokovic also played a mixed doubles match alongside WTA star Aryna Sabalenka during the event.

Fitness and Form Update

Speaking to the press in Beijing, Djokovic was asked about his physical condition following his recent loss. He responded, "Yeah, feeling good so far. Let’s see. Obviously it’s completely different when you’re playing an official match compared to practice sets or sessions. But so far so good."

He added that he was eager to return to China, a place where he has historically performed very well, bringing him confidence ahead of the competition. Djokovic said, "My record speaks for itself on Chinese soil. Knowing that brings a dimension of confidence that I really need. Overall, it’s been really good with the body, how I’m feeling and playing."

Impressive China Open History

Djokovic’s record in Beijing is remarkable: he remains unbeaten there with a 29-0 match record and has claimed six titles at the event. Although he hasn’t played in Beijing since 2015, the 24-time Grand Slam champion expressed excitement about his return after an 11-year absence.

He explained why this tournament holds special value at this stage in his career: "It’s about tournaments where I enjoy playing, where I’ve had past success, and where I feel welcomed by fans in a positive way. I haven’t played here in 11 years. I tried to make it work in previous years but scheduling only allowed Shanghai. This year, Beijing was a priority, and I’m really glad to be here."

Current Ranking and Upcoming Matchup

Before starting the China Open, Djokovic climbed one spot to 11th in the ATP rankings. His overall win-loss record for 2026 stands at 14-7. He has faced Nuno Borges once before, defeating him in the 2025 Athens quarterfinals on his way to winning the title.
