Olivier Giroud Hints at Retirement After Upcoming Season

Olivier Giroud Considers Hanging Up His Boots

As Olivier Giroud approaches his 40th birthday tomorrow, the celebrated French striker has suggested he might retire after this season. In a recent interview with L'Équipe, the 2018 World Cup winner shared that this could very well be his final year playing professionally.

"As a player, I think this is very likely my last season. That's why I'm enjoying every moment," Giroud said, currently signed with Lille.

A Career Spanning More Than Two Decades

Giroud's journey began at Grenoble in 2006. By next year, he will have dedicated 21 years to football. Throughout his career, he became the all-time top scorer for the French national team, earning 137 caps and netting 57 goals.

His club achievements are equally impressive. He lifted the French league title with Montpellier before moving to England, where he played for Arsenal and Chelsea. There, Giroud collected four FA Cups, the 2019 Europa League trophy, and the 2021 Champions League crown.

In July 2025, Giroud returned to France, joining Lille. This current stint is expected to be the final chapter of his professional career.
