Pedro Porro's Frustration Grows as Tottenham Project Stalls
Tottenham’s best player has taken a long, hard look at the project he signed up for and decided he wants out. The club, though, have no intention of rolling over.
Pedro Porro, fresh from a summer in which he helped Spain win the World Cup and earned a place in the team of the tournament, has reportedly lost faith in Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham and is now keen to leave, according to Football Insider.
This is no fringe figure getting itchy feet. This is the 27-year-old right-back who has become a cornerstone of Spurs’ side and one of the few undisputed successes of recent windows. Only months ago, he committed his future to north London with a new contract in early 2026. The message then was clear: Porro believed in the direction of travel under De Zerbi.
The mood has darkened quickly.
De Zerbi arrived as the man chosen to lead a revival, having steadied the club last season and then helped drive a lavish summer rebuild. His presence on the touchline and in the project was a major factor in Sandro Tonali’s decision to join, with the Italy midfielder becoming Spurs’ record signing at £100m.
Yet the season has begun with a limp. Tottenham needed seven attempts to record their first win of the campaign, and the optimism that greeted De Zerbi’s first full season has thinned into doubt.
According to Football Insider, that doubt has taken root in Porro’s mind. Their report states that, at this stage of his career, the defender wants to play at the highest level and fight for major honours – something he is no longer convinced he can do at Spurs.
For a player who has just conquered the world with his country, the contrast is stark. With Spain, Porro has seen what an elite, winning environment feels like. Back at club level, the gap between ambition and reality has rarely felt wider.
Interest, inevitably, is circling from the very top of the game. TEAMtalk revealed on October 15 that both Real Madrid and Barcelona are weighing up moves for the right-back. Football Insider add that Porro would “jump” at the chance to join either of the Spanish giants.
Tottenham know exactly what that kind of lure looks like. They also know what they have on their hands.
The club’s response, according to a fresh update from Football Insider, is defiant rather than resigned. Spurs are described as “relaxed” about the mounting attention around Porro and have “no interest” in selling him in January. There will be no mid-season fire sale, no quick exit to tidy up an awkward situation.
Instead, the plan is to let the football do the talking. The hierarchy want results to turn over the course of the 2026/27 season, trusting that an upturn in performances and league position can pull Porro back onside and restore his belief that he can win things in north London.
If that doesn’t happen, sentiment will give way to hard business. Tottenham will protect their asset. The club are prepared to put a hefty price on Porro’s head, with TEAMtalk previously reporting that they value him at £75m – a figure that would set a world record for a right-back.
For now, the stalemate is clear. A World Cup-winning defender in his prime wants to test himself at the very summit of the game. His club, bruised by a poor start but still clinging to their long-term vision under De Zerbi, refuse to be bullied into a sale.
Something will have to give. The only question is whether it’s Porro’s faith in Tottenham’s future, or Tottenham’s grip on one of the few players who already looks built for the stage he craves.
