Manuel Pellegrini Faces Potential 12-Match Ban After Criticizing Referee in Barcelona Defeat

Real Betis Coach Manuel Pellegrini Could Be Suspended for Up to 12 Matches

Following Real Betis' 5-2 loss to Barcelona, manager Manuel Pellegrini risks a lengthy suspension after openly criticizing referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoechea. The Chilean coach expressed strong dissatisfaction with the officiating during the match, which has drawn attention from Spain's refereeing union.

Refereeing Union to Review Comments

The Spanish referees' association, AESAF, plans to examine Pellegrini's remarks carefully. They may take the issue to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Disciplinary Committee. Pellegrini's main complaints involved a disallowed goal for Giovani Lo Celso due to a handball by Cucho Hernandez and a red card that he believes significantly affected the game's outcome.

"It seemed to me like a lamentable performance by the referee, lacking footballing criteria," Pellegrini stated after the match.

The Betis manager argued that these refereeing decisions were key factors in the final scoreline, potentially leading to disciplinary measures if his words violate Spanish football rules.

Potential Sanctions Under RFEF Rules

Article 106 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code targets those who question officials’ honesty or impartiality, or who use offensive language against referees. Should AESAF lodge a formal complaint and the Disciplinary Committee find Pellegrini guilty, he could face a ban lasting between four and twelve matches.

Additionally, a fine ranging from €601 to €3,005.06 might be imposed. This would add to the disappointment of the day for the Real Betis boss.

No official punishment has been confirmed yet. Some past cases involving similar criticism have been ruled compatible with freedom of expression, so Pellegrini might avoid sanctions depending on how the authorities interpret his comments.

At present, Pellegrini remains at risk while the refereeing union decides its next actions following the defeat against Barcelona.
