PSG Goalkeeping Situation: January Window Options
Paris Saint-Germain are not closing the book on their goalkeeping situation. Not yet. Not even with Matvey Safonov installed as No. 1 and showing clear signs of growth.
According to Le Parisien, the French champions are prepared to move for a goalkeeper in January if the right opportunity appears. It is not an active hunt, but the radar is on, the market watched closely.
Safonov has held the gloves since midway through last season, inheriting the role in a position that has seen unusual turbulence for a club of PSG’s stature. Lucas Chevalier arrived from Lille OSC with the promise of stability after Gianluigi Donnarumma’s departure last summer, only to struggle under the weight of expectation at the Parc des Princes in his first months.
The consequence was swift. Safonov stepped in, and PSG reshaped their build-up with a goalkeeper more comfortable on the ball. His distribution has improved, his command of possession more in tune with what the club demands from the back.
Yet the doubts have not vanished.
Safonov’s weaknesses are no secret internally. His issues at the near post keep reappearing on the big stage, the latest reminder coming in midweek against Barcelona. On nights like that, every flaw feels magnified, every goal conceded a question about the long-term plan.
That is why the door to the market remains open.
PSG’s summer chase of Zion Suzuki underlined that this is not a settled department. The Japan international ultimately chose Aston Villa, but the pursuit itself revealed a club willing to challenge its own hierarchy in goal if the profile is right.
Nothing has changed on that front. As January approaches, PSG will again scan the landscape, ready to react if a premium option shakes loose or a smart deal becomes possible.
Safonov is the man in possession. His progress keeps him there. But in a squad built to win now, the margin for error is thin, and the message from the club is clear: the gloves are his—for as long as he can keep them.
