The summer window closed without the left-sided reinforcement Gian Piero Gasperini had asked for, leaving Roma to work in a quieter, more delicate arena: the free-agent market. No auctions, no bidding wars. Just targeted moves, if the right profile appears.
The strategy is simple and ruthless. No stopgaps, no signings for the sake of it. Roma will move only if an opportunity truly matches what the coach wants on that flank.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, one name sits firmly in that conversation: Wilfried Zaha. The Ivorian, who came close to joining Roma back in 2023, is again on the radar. His last spell has ended, he is without a club, and that status makes him an intriguing option on a free transfer. Creativity, one-on-one ability, experience at the highest level – on paper, it ticks plenty of boxes.
He is not alone on the list.
- Krépin Diatta is another possibility. The Senegalese wide player, recently released after his last season with Monaco, offers pace and verticality. A different profile, more direct, more explosive, but still capable of covering that left channel Roma are trying to secure.
- Then there is the most established name of the three: Raphael Guerreiro. At 32, the Portuguese comes off a season at Bayern Munich and would bring a refined left foot, tactical intelligence and the versatility to operate across the left flank. For a coach obsessed with balance and movement, a player like that carries obvious appeal.
