Senegal Awaits November Ruling on AFCON Title Dispute with Morocco

Senegal Faces Extended Wait for CAS Decision on AFCON Title

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) will have to wait until late November to find out if the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will overturn the decision that awarded the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title to Morocco. This follows the appeal against the ruling made after the January 18 final in Rabat, where Morocco defeated Senegal 1-0 in extra time.

Delay Due to Detailed Legal Review

After hearings took place in Lausanne on October 8, CAS has decided to take more time to deliver a comprehensive judgment rather than a quick verdict. The official announcement states that the full CAS Award, which includes detailed legal reasoning, is expected by the end of November 2026.

CAS director general Matthieu Reeb commented outside the hearing: "I know it’s a long wait for the fans a few months after the final between Senegal and Morocco. I expect the decision to come not today, not tomorrow, but a few days later. The facts are set, are clear and the discussions will be on some procedural issues and legal aspects."

The Incident Behind the Dispute

The controversy erupted during the final when Senegal players staged a 14-minute walkout after a penalty was awarded against them late in regular time. They returned to the dressing room in protest. Play resumed, and although Morocco missed the penalty, they scored the winner in extra time.

In March, the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) Appeal Board ruled that Senegal’s walkout was a forfeiture of the match, awarding Morocco a 3-0 default win and stripping Senegal of the title. Senegal’s appeal argues that the referee’s decision is final and he allowed the match to continue despite the interruption.

Binding Nature of CAS Ruling

The arbitration panel consists of three experts: Gerald Simon, a French sports law specialist; Luigi Fumagalli, an Italian international law professor; and Ulrich Haas, a lawyer based in Hamburg and professor at the University of Zurich. Their ruling will have the force of a national court judgment under the New York Convention, making it enforceable by sports bodies or courts.
