Sheffield United Sign Veteran Forward Jordan Ayew

Sheffield United have moved to bolster their forward line with the signing of veteran Ghana international Jordan Ayew on a deal until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old arrives at Bramall Lane as a free agent after leaving Leicester City in the summer, following the Foxes’ drop into League One. His résumé is long and hard-earned: 124 caps for Ghana, more than a decade across the Premier League and Championship, and a reputation for graft as much as goals.

Ayew first came to English football with Aston Villa in 2015 after leaving Lorient, and has since become a familiar figure across the top two tiers, turning out for Villa, Crystal Palace and Leicester. He has operated across the front line throughout his career – wide right, wide left, through the middle – a versatility Chris Wilder clearly values in a squad that has been stretched.

Significance of the Addition

Wilder made no attempt to play down the significance of the addition.

“We're talking about someone here with bags of experience from right at the top level of the game,” the Blades boss told the club’s website. “Only a few months ago he was captaining Ghana in the World Cup, so he's someone with real pedigree.

“He did well at this level last season in difficult circumstances and has played all across the front positions during his career which gives us plenty of options.”

For a side fighting to steady themselves, Ayew brings know-how, durability and a career’s worth of hard miles. Now he has one more challenge: to turn that experience into points for Sheffield United before the season runs out.
