United's 25-Man Premier League Squad for 2026-27: Key Absences Explained
The transfer window has slammed shut, the dust has settled, and United have handed in their official 25-man squad list for the 2026-27 Premier League season. The rules are tight, the margins even tighter: no more than 25 senior players, and only 17 of them allowed to fall outside the ‘homegrown’ category.
United have hit those marks with room to breathe. Eight homegrown players make the cut – among them Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount – backed by 15 team-mates who do not meet the homegrown criteria but complete Michael Carrick’s senior group.
On the surface, the list looks stacked. Then one name jumps out by its absence.
Mainoo.
A midfielder who has already felt the sharp edges of elite football, Mainoo spent the first half of last season pushed to the margins under Ruben Amorim before Carrick brought him back into the fold and into a central role. To see him missing from the official squad sheet is the sort of detail that makes supporters’ pulses quicken.
This time, they can relax.
There is no rift, no shock exclusion, no late transfer twist. Mainoo was born after the start of 2005, which means he is officially classed as an Under-21 player for this campaign. Under Premier League rules, that status changes everything: U-21 players do not need to be included in the 25-man list and remain fully eligible to play in the competition.
He can feature every week without his name ever appearing on that senior document.
The same technicality applies to Leny Yoro. The defender turns 21 in November, but for this season he also sits in the U-21 bracket. Like Mainoo, he is absent from the senior list only on paper, not in Carrick’s plans.
