Vincent Kompany Collapses During Bayern Training Session

Vincent Kompany is in hospital after collapsing during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday, casting a shadow over the club’s preparations for the weekend.

The Bayern head coach has been battling a virus for several days. He was visibly in discomfort during last weekend’s win over RB Leipzig, struggling to walk freely along the touchline. Even then, he chose to stay in the technical area, riding out the pain as Bayern pushed to a crucial league victory.

By midweek, Kompany sounded more optimistic. After the draw with Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday, he insisted he was recovering and on the way back to full strength. It seemed like a minor setback, something he could manage through a congested spell of fixtures.

That belief vanished on Friday.

Ahead of Sunday’s Bundesliga clash with Freiburg, Kompany attended a reserve-team training session. He was not in charge of the drills, just watching on, when he suddenly collapsed. The incident immediately raised alarm inside the club and he was taken to hospital.

Bayern moved quickly to clarify the situation, releasing a statement on their website confirming the 38-year-old is under medical supervision.

“Vincent Kompany is currently undergoing a thorough examination in the hospital and will remain under medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage all training and match-related operations,” the club said.

With Bayern still fighting on multiple fronts, the sight of their coach being taken ill is a jarring reminder that the relentless demands of elite football do not stop at the white line. For now, though, results and tactics are pushed aside.

Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, underlined that shift in priorities.

“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery,” he said. “Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a quick recovery.”

Support has also arrived from England, where Kompany’s status as a Manchester City great remains untouched. His former club posted a message on X, writing: “Everyone at Manchester City is wishing a speedy recovery to our former captain and Club legend, Vincent Kompany. Get well soon, Vinny.”

For the moment, Bayern’s coaching staff will carry the load on the training pitch and on matchdays. The bigger question hangs over when, and in what condition, their manager will be able to return to the dugout.
