Vincent Kompany Collapses During Bayern Munich Training
Vincent Kompany has been admitted to hospital after collapsing during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday, casting a shadow over the early weeks of his tenure in Germany.
The 40-year-old, who has been battling a viral infection affecting his legs, went down while observing a session involving Bayern’s amateur side. He had already been visibly struggling in recent days, needing assistance on stairs in the build-up to Bayern’s Champions League clash with Arsenal.
Bayern confirmed the incident in a stark club statement.
“Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern's amateurs,” the statement read. “The first-team coach had been watching the second team's session.
“Kompany will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations.”
The Belgian had missed the pre-match press conference before Arsenal’s visit on Tuesday, but still took his place on the touchline for the 2-2 draw, having already cut a subdued figure during Bayern’s 6-1 demolition of Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Saturday. On that occasion, he largely stayed seated, a rare sight for a coach usually defined by his intensity and presence on the sideline.
Between those two fixtures, Kompany spent a full day at home, attempting to shake off the virus. Assistant coach Aaron Danks hinted that his manager might need longer to recover, and the events of Friday have underlined those concerns.
Inside the club, the message is clear: football can wait.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said: “The health of Vincent Kompany is our utmost priority. At FC Bayern, we will do everything to ensure he recovers quickly. Vinnie is receiving all necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs.
“His coaching team, which we fully trust, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
For now, that coaching team will lead preparations for Sunday’s Bundesliga fixture against Freiburg, with no guarantee Kompany will be back in the dugout. His condition, and the results of hospital examinations, will dictate the next steps.
Bayern, a club accustomed to dealing with pressure in title races and European knockout ties, now finds itself dealing with a very different kind of concern: how quickly, and how fully, its new head coach can return to the technical area.
