Vincent Kompany Collapses After Bayern Munich Training

Vincent Kompany collapsed after Bayern Munich training on Friday and was taken to hospital, casting a shadow over the Bundesliga leaders’ preparations for the weekend.

The 40-year-old coach was watching the session when he suddenly went down, the club confirmed. Medical staff reacted immediately before he was transported to hospital for further checks.

“Kompany will undergo comprehensive examinations at the hospital and remain under medical care,” Bayern said in a statement. His assistants have stepped in to run training and handle all match-related duties while he recovers.

Sporting director Max Eberl underlined the club’s stance in clear terms. Kompany’s health, he said, comes before everything else.

“Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority,” Eberl stated. “We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure that he recovers quickly. Vinnie will receive all the necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs.”

The incident comes at the end of a draining week for the Belgian. He had already been diagnosed with a viral infection that kept him away from a training session and a press conference on Tuesday. Even so, he returned to the touchline for Bayern’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

After that match, Kompany admitted he had pushed himself too far, trying to continue despite feeling unwell and ignoring what his body was telling him. Two days later, those warning signs have turned into a serious health scare.

On the pitch, Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga and are due to travel to Freiburg on Sunday. The game will go ahead, but without their head coach on the sideline if he remains under observation.

His coaching staff will take charge in the meantime. The real question around Säbener Straße now is not tactical or selection-based, but a far more human one: when will their manager be well enough to return?
