Vincent Kompany Collapses at Bayern Training Ground

Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing at Bayern Munich’s training ground while observing a session involving the club’s second team.

The Bayern head coach, who has been battling a viral infection in recent days, was watching the amateurs’ training when he suddenly required medical attention. Club staff moved quickly, and Kompany was transported to hospital for further checks.

In a statement, Bayern said: “Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern's amateurs. The first-team coach had been watching the second team's session. Kompany will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations.”

Sky in Germany reported that Kompany’s condition is stable.

The incident comes at the end of a demanding week for the Belgian. Illness had already forced him to miss his pre-match press conference before Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena, though he recovered sufficiently to take his place on the touchline for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw.

Bayern now turn their attention back to the Bundesliga, where they face Freiburg on Sunday. For the moment, the responsibility for preparing the side falls to Kompany’s coaching staff, as the club waits on the results of his hospital examinations and a clearer picture of when he can safely return to full duty.
