Vincent Kompany Taken to Hospital After Collapsing During Training
Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday, with the club confirming their head coach is undergoing “a thorough examination”.
The Belgian, who has been battling a virus in recent days, was overseeing Bayern’s reserve team session when he suddenly felt unwell. Medical staff intervened and he was taken to hospital for further checks.
Kompany had remained on the touchline for Bayern’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday, despite the infection, as the Bundesliga leaders edged closer to a place in the knockout stages. Two days later, the strain appeared to catch up with him.
In a statement, Bayern outlined the incident in stark terms: “Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during a training session for Bayern’s reserve team. The head coach of the professional squad had been observing the second team’s session.
“Kompany is currently undergoing a thorough examination in the hospital and will remain under medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage all training and match-related operations.”
The timing is far from ideal for Bayern. They are due to travel to Freiburg on Sunday as they look to protect their lead at the top of the Bundesliga, with Kompany having quickly stamped his authority on the squad since taking charge. For now, though, the touchline will belong to his assistants.
Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, underlined the club’s stance in a carefully worded message of support.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery,” Eberl said.
“Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a quick recovery.”
Bayern’s immediate plans will be adjusted. The season’s ambitions can wait. The priority now is that their head coach returns to the training pitch only when he is fully ready to lead again.
