Virgil van Dijk's Clear Stance on Cody Gakpo's Future at Liverpool
Virgil van Dijk doesn’t often deal in ambiguity. Asked whether he wants Cody Gakpo to stay at Liverpool amid serious interest from Manchester City, the captain needed only five words.
“What do you think?”
The message landed with the weight of a tackle. City are in active talks over an £80 million move for the Dutch forward, with The Athletic reporting that the champions have become Gakpo’s preferred destination after Tottenham Hotspur also made their move. The clock is ticking on the window. The noise around Anfield is growing louder.
Liverpool, though, are drawing a line. For now.
Van Dijk draws a red line
Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham, Van Dijk made it clear that for him this is not just another transfer story to ride out.
“He’s a top-class player. I think we should keep our quality players,” he said, before widening the lens beyond pure footballing logic.
“I want him to stay not just because he's a top-class player, but also because he's a friend of mine. He's very important to us.”
That “us” matters. This is a squad in the middle of what Van Dijk himself calls a “transitional phase”, trying to stay competitive at the very top while reshaping on the fly. Losing a player of Gakpo’s versatility and finishing, this late in the window, would punch a sizeable hole in that plan.
Inside the club, there is a firm condition: Gakpo does not leave in the next 48 hours unless Liverpool secure another winger first. No replacement, no sale. Even with £80 million on the table, the sporting logic has to hold.
Barcola arrival underlines Liverpool’s pull
One reinforcement is already on the way. Bradley Barcola is undergoing a medical ahead of his move from Paris Saint-Germain, a deal that Van Dijk believes sends a message well beyond the training ground.
“He's a good player, and he has pace,” Van Dijk said. “I remember a goal he scored against Chelsea in the Champions League last season. If he comes here, he'll be welcomed with open arms.”
There was more than polite welcome in his tone. There was pride.
“I don't think there's any doubt that a club like Liverpool is a very attractive destination for very good players. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We all know we're going through something of a transitional phase. Either you want to be part of it or you don't.”
That line could apply just as easily to Gakpo as to Barcola. Stay and help drive the rebuild, or step into a City side that hoovers up trophies and talent with equal appetite.
A squad on the brink of a decision
Van Dijk knows the stakes. He has seen eras built and dismantled at Anfield. For him, the equation is simple: add quality, don’t bleed it.
“Adding quality to the squad always makes a difference,” he said. “We'll see what the next few days bring. After Tuesday, we have to fight for everything without any regrets.”
